With President Donald Trump in the White House, it is more important than ever to elect strong local leaders who will stand up for our progressive values.
South King County native Dave Upthegrove currently represents District Five (Renton, Kent, SeaTac, Des Moines, Burien, Normandy Park) on the King County Council-- where he has been a fierce and capable advocate for social justice and economic opportunity for all. He works tirelessly on behalf of his district and the diverse communities of South King County. As Chair of the Budget Committee, Dave has delivered for South King County-- securing new investments in public safety, affordable housing, and youth programs.
Before being elected to the King County Council, Dave represented South King County for twelve years in the Washington State House of Representatives. During that time he served as Chair of the Select Committee on Puget Sound and Chair of the House Environment Committee. The Washington Conservation Voters named Dave their "Legislator of the Year" in 2011.
Upthegrove was one of four recipients of the 2009 Fuse "Sizzle" Awards Mother Jones Award. The award honored the lawmakers for their leadership of a coalition of conservation and labor legislators. Mother Jones was a famous turn of the century labor and community organizer; she was denounced on the floor of the US Senate as the "grandmother of all agitators."
The non-partisan Municipal League of King County, which evaluates candidates based on involvement, character, effectiveness and knowledge gave Upthegrove the highest possible rating of "outstanding" in previous campaigns.
Dave has a B.A. in Environmental Conservation with a minor in Biology from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and a Graduate Certificate in Energy Policy Planning from the University of Idaho. He currently lives with his husband Chad in Des Moines.
